Today I’m sharing how to make a simple box in any size. In the video attached I walk you through how to figure out what size card stock you need in order to make your box. It also includes a little cheat that makes it easy to make a lid!
I’ll try to explain the process but I encourage you to watch the video, it explains it much better than I can.
How to make a simple box
- Measure your item to determine the size of the base of your box. Jot that number down. For example, my item measures approximately 3.5″ x 3.5″. My box is square so I have the same measurement on both sides. Depending on the shape of your item, you may have two different measurements.
- Measure the thickness of your item. This determines the height of your box. Add that number to the numbers above, twice. My item is just shy of 1.25″ so I’ll add 3.5″ + 1.25″ + 1.25″. And do that for both sides. If your box is rectangular, you’ll add that number to each side twice.
- Add those numbers together for the size of your box. Cut your card stock accordingly. Mine will be 6″ x 6″.
- Score along all 4 sides at 1.25″ (the box height).
- Trim up the score lines to create the flaps (see video).
- Fold along the score lines and assemble box.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the lid but add 1/16″ to the original measurement. For my box my card stock would be 6-1/16″ x 6-1/16″.
- Before trimming the flaps and assembling, cut 1/4″ off of each of the 4 sides. This will allow the top to be just a bit shorter so you can see a bit of the box bottom at the side of the box. You can omit this step and the lid will cover the entire bottom of the box.
- Trim the flaps and decorate the top as desired. This is easier to do while the lid is flat.
- Assemble the lid.
Measurements for this Box
Bottom:
- Basic Gray: 6″ x 6″ scored at 1-1/4″ on all 4 sides
Top:
- Fresh Freesia: 6-1/16″ x 6-1/16″ scored at 1-1/4″ on all 4 sides and then 1/4″ trimmed off each side
- Basic Gray: 3-1/4″ x 3-1/4″
- Toadstool Gardens DSP: 3-1/8″ x 3-1/8″
- Basic White: 1-1/4″ x 3-1/8″ and scraps for stamping
- Fresh Freesia Ribbon: about 8″
Here are a couple other boxes that I made. The smaller one is the same measurement as the one above. They all contain the same thing – a little mushroom scrubby.
How cute is this?! I love being able to match the packaging to what’s inside the box. So fun!
Until next time,
