If you’ve been paper crafting for any length of time, you know the struggle: that growing pile of scraps that feels too pretty to toss… but too small (or too overwhelming) to use. As someone who truly believes in using what I have—I’m here to tell you that those scraps aren’t leftovers… they’re opportunities.
Scraps Are Already “Paid For”
Every scrap in your stash came from something you loved enough to purchase. That means it still holds value! When we ignore our scraps, we’re not getting the full return on our supplies. Using them stretches your investment and helps you get more from every single sheet of paper, piece of ribbon, or stamped image.
They Make Creativity Easier, Not Harder
Starting with a full sheet of card stock can feel intimidating. Scraps, on the other hand, remove that pressure. They’re small, manageable, and perfect for experimenting. Try a new layout, test a colour combo, or play with layering—scraps make it easy to create without overthinking.
Perfect for Quick Projects
Short on time? Scraps are your best friend. They’re ideal for:
- Card fronts and accents – create fun patterns on your card fronts using scraps. I shared a couple of simple ideas in this blog post.
- Perfect for master boards – learn more about master boards
- Cluster building – check out this blog post full of tips on building clusters
- Journaling spots – neutral, or lightly patterned papers are perfect journaling spots. Add them as tuck ins in your junk journals or on scrapbook layouts.
- Die-cut elements – use your scraps to punch or die cut shapes. So that they are ready for when you sit down to craft.
You can sit down for 20 minutes and walk away with something beautiful—no prep required. Store them in a small container, and when you’re ready to create, you already have beautiful pieces ready to go. It’s like giving your future self a creative gift.
Scraps Encourage You to Mix Your Stash
When you work with scraps, you naturally start combining products from different collections. This is where the magic happens! Patterns you wouldn’t normally pair together suddenly work, and your projects take on a unique, layered look that feels far more personal.
They’re a Junk Journaler’s Dream
If you love junk journaling (like I do!), scraps are the heart and soul of your pages. Bits of designer paper, stamped images, offcuts, tags, and textured pieces all come together to tell a story. Nothing has to match perfectly—and that’s exactly what makes it beautiful.

Scraps Reduce Waste (and Guilt!)
Let’s be honest—throwing away pretty paper hurts a little. Using your scraps means less waste and more satisfaction. You’ll feel better about your crafting and your space will stay more manageable.
If your scrap pile feels overwhelming, start small. Challenge yourself to create one project using only scraps. No cutting into new paper—just work with what you have. You might be surprised at how freeing (and fun!) it feels.
Your scraps aren’t the leftovers of past projects—they’re the beginning of your next ones. When you start giving them the attention they deserve, you’ll not only use more of your stash, but you’ll also unlock a whole new level of creativity.
So pull out that pile, grab your favourite tools, and start creating. Your scraps are ready when you are.
Until next time,
