Trusty Tools Scrapbook Layout

Today I’m sharing this stash busting trusty tools layout with you. But before we get into the specifics, let me share what inspired this layout.

For the last couple weeks my husband and I have been getting things ready to transition my father-in-law from hospital to an extended care facility. He went into the hospital at the end of November and we weren’t sure if he’d end up being able to go back home. We received confirmation a few weeks ago and we were told as soon as a bed opens up, he’d be transferred. Well that happened earlier this week. It’s been a crazy few weeks.

When we went to tour the facility, I noticed that each resident has a 12×12 layout outside their room with their names and information on them. This helps other residents and the staff get to know them. Normally it’s the recreation department who takes care of creating the layouts. However, I asked if it could be something that I did for him.

The Details

So I dug into my stash and grabbed a few things and got to work. Here’s what I pulled out:

• Close to My Heart Into the Wild pattern paper (background)
• Leftover circle from one of the layouts from the July 2025 Virtual Scrapbooking Retreat
• Long ago retired twine
• Trusty Tools bundle – he used to work in the hardware industry so this bundle was perfect!
• Alphabet a la Mode Dies

The layout needed to consist of a 4″ x 6″ photo, his name and some personal information about him (his likes, family members, what he did for a living etc.). I had the idea of adding the journaling to the peg boards. So I typed up my journaling and then cut it into strips.

I cut the screw driver heads from some silver card stock and added those to make it look like that’s how the journaling was attached.

My husband and I spent a lot of time setting up his room and trying to make it feel comfortable and homey. Creating this layout was just something special I could do for him. There’s something so fulfilling about being able to put my love of paper crafting to use in ways that can make something extra special.
