Today’s blog post is about creative ways to use scraps. Specifically the random bits and pieces you have left after you create a project but just can’t throw out. Normally these pieces get thrown into a bin and then never looked at but it’s amazing how much you can create with them as inspiration.
I usually go through these once every 6-months to a year. Sometimes I purge, donate or toss them. But sometimes I spend a few hours creating with them. That’s what I did yesterday.
Let me share my process with you and then I’ll share what I ended up creating. You can also follow along in the video linked below.
The Process
- Sort through your pieces. I usually sort into the following categories: die cut shapes and labels; leaves; Christmas and words. Sometimes these categories will change depending on what I have lots of but I find these cover most of what’s in my bin.
- Go through my scrap card stock and pull out any embossed pieces in neutral colours. These can sometimes be used as bases or backgrounds.
- Pull out any tags that I have, my scrap ribbon bin and my retired embellishments. Using up these scraps is a great opportunity to use some retired product because the bits & pieces that are in the bin are so random, some of which I don’t remember where they were from.
- The final step prior to assembly is just to grab things from each pile that match or work well together.
- Time to start playing!
May the Good Card
This first, and second card, use some leftover circles from a project that I cut for a class. I had several of them so I thought they’d make a great subtle background. The lime leaf is cut from the Gorgeously Made dies, the vellum leaf is punched from the Bough Punch, and the greeting is on a Modern Label punch. The only thing that isn’t available on this card are the retired embellishments.
Another card created using the same circle shapes and other random pieces from my scrap bin. The only thing that wasn’t a scrap was the ribbon.
Celebrate Card
For this card I used several of the same shape cut from the Nested Essentials dies and Let’s Go Fishing DSP. I again created a fun background – multiples really do make it easy to create backgrounds as you can see from the first 3 project ideas. The vanilla shape is popped up and then the celebrate added to the top. To finish it off I added some retired vanilla dots and a wheat bow.
Dad Card
For this next card, I had several of these fussy cut fish that I added to a piece of vanilla card stock to create my own pattern paper. Then I grabbed some coordinating shapes and the letters to spell DAD. A little thread of twine from my scrap bin finishes it off.
Congratulations Card
Can you believe that everything on this card came from my scrap bin?! This is my favourite one that I created.
Christmas Tag
Tags are another great project to create with your random bits and pieces. The base that I’m using for this tag was created using the Garden Meadow Dies. The sprig is one of our Textural Elements that has some pearl enamel effects on it. The door is a stamp from an past Paper Pumpkin kit. It was coloured in and added to my scrap bin so I just fussy cut it and added it to the tag. The ‘For You’ was also in there. I think that was from a past kit but I couldn’t tell you which one.
Tags
I have some of these tags leftover from my daughter’s bridal shower. They are perfect for decorating and a great size for scrapbook layouts or cards. For this one I used the new online exclusive stamp set called Textured Timber. This set is perfect for adding just a bit of texture to backgrounds. The floral image is a retired set from Sale-a-Bration 2023 (I think) and the label shape leftover from a past kit.

Until next time,
