Snippet Rolls: The Perfect Way to Turn Paper Scraps into Beautiful Embellishments
It’s time to turn your scraps into beautiful embellishments! Today I’m going to share a fun way to put those pretty scraps to use by making a snippet roll. I’ve recently discovered snippet rolls and am hooked. They’re fun to make, wonderfully relaxing, and become a stash of ready-to-use embellishments for future projects.
What Is a Snippet Roll?
A snippet roll is a long strip of fabric, cardstock, or paper that becomes the foundation for layering all kinds of scraps. You simply add bits and pieces as you go, overlapping papers, book pages, fabric, lace, ribbon, tickets, labels, die cuts, stamps, washi tape, and anything else that catches your eye.
Once your roll is complete, you can cut it apart into smaller pieces whenever you need an embellishment.
Think of it as creating a collection of mini collages that are ready whenever inspiration strikes.
The beauty of snippet rolls is that there are no rules. You can use anything!

Why You’ll Love Making Them
Snippet rolls are more than just a way to use scraps—they’re a creative exercise that encourages experimentation. As you layer different textures, colours, and patterns, you’ll often discover combinations you wouldn’t have planned otherwise. Because you’re working with leftovers, there’s very little pressure to make everything perfect. They’re also perfect for those days when you want to create but don’t have the energy to design an entire card, scrapbook layout, or journal spread. Simply sit down, grab your scraps, and enjoy the process.
Ways to Use Your Finished Snippets
Once your snippet roll is finished, cut it into sections of any size. Each piece becomes a unique embellishment you can add to all kinds of paper crafting projects. They can be used on:
- Junk journals
- Handmade journals
- Cards
- Scrapbook layouts
- Mini albums
- Gift tags
- Mixed media projects
- Pocket pages
- Planner spreads
You can even stitch around the edges, add ink, distress the papers, or finish them with a sentiment for even more personality.
Make Them Your Own
There isn’t just one style of snippet roll. You might create one using: soft vintage papers and lace; bright, colourful scrapbook papers; nature-inspired greens and florals; Christmas leftovers; neutral book pages with black stamping or one with monochromatic colour palettes. Creating themed rolls means you’ll always have embellishments ready to match your next project.
A Great Scrap-Busting Project
One of the biggest benefits of snippet rolls is that they make even the tiniest scraps useful again. Pieces that seem too small for cards or scrapbook layouts suddenly become part of something beautiful. Instead of letting scraps pile up, you’re transforming them into a creative resource you’ll actually use. And let’s be honest—using supplies you already have is incredibly satisfying!
Give It a Try
The next time you’re cleaning up your craft table, don’t put those little scraps away. Gather them into a pile and start building a snippet roll instead. There are no mistakes, no measurements, and no expectations—just layers of creativity waiting to happen. Before long, you’ll have a collection of one-of-a-kind embellishments ready for your next journal, scrapbook layout, card, or mixed media project.
Until next time,

I absolutely love this idea! Thank you so much for the inspiration.
