In today’s blog post I’m sharing 4 simple ways to use scenic 6×6 paper. Stampin’ Up! currently carries a couple beautiful scenic patterned paper packs that I’ll be highlighting in todays projects:
- One Horse Open Sleigh DSP and
- Meandering Meadows DSP.
Both of these paper packs are absolutely stunning but I must admit that when they first started carrying these types of papers, I would avoid buying them, because I couldn’t wrap my head around how to use them. But over the years we’ve carried quite a few different versions and, in my opinion, have been some of the best papers that they’ve carried.
These types of scenic patterns offer some unique opportunities to create some pretty fabulous cards. These ideas can definitely be used with any patterned paper but I feel that the scenic patterns step these cards up to the next level.
Let’s take a look…
If you look at the patterns in either of these paper packs, you can see that these patterns are absolutely stunning and you don’t need to do much to create a beautiful card. So let’s keep it simple for this first card.
Adding a simple greeting with a bit of ribbon is all that is needed to create a stunning card.
Measurements:
- Misty Moonlight: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″
- Lemon Lolly: 4″ x 5-1/4″
- Pattern Paper: 3-7/8″ x 5-1/8″
- Basic White: 4″ x 5-1/4″ and scrap for greeting
- Ribbon: 4″
- Twine: 6″
Here’s another sample using this same idea in a square card.
Because the greeting is a little larger on this card, I felt like it needed something behind it. I decided on a deckled circle cut from vellum. Using vellum allows the beautiful pattern to still show through but makes the greeting pop instead of getting lost.
Measurements:
- Basic White: 5-1/4″ x 10-1/2″ scored at 5-1/4″
- Melon Mambo: 4-3/4″ x 4-3/4″
- Pattern Paper: 4-5/8″ x 4-5/8″
- Vellum: 6th smallest Deckled Circle Die
- Basic white: scrap for greeting
- White Twine: about 20″
Telescoping Card
For the second card, we are going to stick with the same idea – a panel for the card front but we’ll add a bit of dimension to it by creating a telescoping card.
It’s hard to tell from the photo but there are three layers. The largest layer is adhered flat to the card front. The next layer was adhered using dimensionals and the inside layer was stuck down using adhesive strips. Our adhesive strips are slightly thicker than our dimensionals so it causes the inside layer to stick up higher than the middle layer.
Measurements:
- Card Base (Early Espresso): 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″
- Pattern Paper: 4″ x 5-1/4″ (cut with the 2nd and 4th largest Deckled Rectangle Dies)
- Basic White: 4″ x 5-1/4″ (inside) and scrap for greeting
- Ribbon: 5″
- White Twine: 8″
- Snowflakes: x2
Here’s the same card recreated with the Meandering Meadows DSP.
Use Strips to Highlight the Pattern
Cutting the pattern paper into strips and then piecing the pattern back together, leaving a bit of a gap in between is a great way to provide a bit of visual interest in the pattern but not taking anything away from its beauty.
Measurements:
- Card Base (Misty Moonlight): 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″ ; 3-7/8″ x 5-1/8″
- Layer 2 (Copper Clay): 4″ x 5-1/4″
- Pattern Paper: 3-3/4″ x 1-1/8″ (cut 4) and 1-1/2″ x 5-1/4″ (inside)
- Basic White: 4″ x 5-1/4″ (inside) and 7/8″ x 4-1/4″
- Ribbon: 5″
- Twine/Fibers: enough for a bow
And another sample. Measurements are the same as above.
Window Card
This card was created by my friend Lorna Raczynski. It’s a great example of how you can give the impression of looking out a window at a scene. This sample uses the fabulous die from the Garden Meadow dies, however, you could use almost any shape – circles, rectangles, hexagons, even a heart would look amazing.
Measurements:
- Card Base (Basic White): 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″ and 4″ x 5-1/4″ and scrap for greeting and stamping
- Pattern Paper: 3-3/4″ x 5″
- Twine: 6″
- Dragonflies: x2
See how these cards come together in the video below.

These cards are just lovely. Which die set did you use for the branch on one of the lower cards?
