Today I’m kicking off a new monthly series – card making using scraps #1. I’m a firm believer in using scraps and have SO many ideas on how to use your them that I’m committing to sharing a couple ideas every month.
Here’s what you can expect… One Friday a month I’ll share tips & tricks on how to use your paper scraps for making cards. I’ve got a fun twist for this first one. We’ll be using scraps of holiday pattern paper to make non holiday themed cards!
Before we begin, if you want to continue making cards using your Christmas themed paper here are some tips.
- Choose patterns that aren’t obviously holiday themed. Often times with double sided pattern paper, one side will be themed and the other side will be a bit more generic.
- Consider the types of cards you’ll need. For example – maybe some thank you cards for the gifts you receive over the holidays. These can still be created using Christmas themed paper but you’ll be adding a greeting of thanks.
- Some holiday themed paper can also pass as winter themed. Maybe you’ve got some January or February birthdays to celebrate, or need a thinking of you card. Winter themed paper can definitely be used for either of these.
Just a reminder that any of these products can be recreated using any patterned paper and for any occasion. Both of the cards that I’m sharing this month focus on using a punch with your scraps. I’ve used the Heartfelt Hexagon punch but the same idea can be recreated using pretty much any shape.
Let’s take a look at our first card
For this first card design I pulled scraps from the Traditions of St. Nick dsp that I used last week. There are a few patterns in this paper pack that are not Christmasy themed at all. I pulled out this pebbled path leafy pattern and my Heartfelt Hexagon punch, which is my current favourite punch.
There were no other scraps in the paper pack that worked well with this particular pattern so I chose to add in an embossed piece of coordinating card stock to make my idea work.
Here are the measurements is you’d like to recreate the card:
- Pebbled Path: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″
- Basic White: 4″ x 5-1/4″ (x2) one for the inside and the other embossed with the Timber EF; 5/8″ x 5″ piece of white for the greeting
- Pebbled Path: 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ embossed with the Distressed Tile EF
- Pattern Paper Scraps: 2 of the Heartfelt Hexagon shape
- Ribbon: 6″
- Twine: 8″
- Pearls: x3
I had a few extra punched pieces left so I created a coordinating gift bag.
In the video I linked below I created this card. It’s the same card just different pattern paper and greeting.
Create a Fun Background with your Scraps
Use your scraps to create a fun background.
If you’d like to replicate a scene with a punched shape you’ll need a larger piece to work with. I believe this one started as a 6″ x 6″ scrap. However, the example below requires much less of one pattern.
Measurements:
- Basic White Thick: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″
- Vellum: 2nd largest Stylish Shape Circle
- Basic White: 4″ x 5-1/4″ and 3″ x 3″ for greeting
- Twine: 8″
- Sequins: x3
If you’d like to watch how these two cards come together, you can find the video replay here.
I hope you enjoyed our first month of card making using scraps ideas. I’ll be back again next month to share some more fun ideas.
Until next time,
