Petal Card Tutorial

As mentioned in my post yesterday, here is a quick tutorial on how to create a petal card in any size. Keep in mind that we carry a Petal Card Big Shot die – folded up it creates a 2-1/2″ square card. Using the die is definitely quick & easy – it cuts and scores it for you all at once. However, if you want a card in a different size – this is one way to do it.

1. Draw out a square in the size of card that you would like. I started with a 5″ square base but you can start with any size. I drew mine out on a piece of cardboard that came from a Definitely Decorative package – the cardboard from our dsp packs works well too.
2. Now cut out a circle in the same size. So I cut out a 5″ circle. You can see that mine isn’t a complete circle and that’s fine as long as you have at least 1/2 a circle.
3. Now line up your cut out circle with the square that you’ve drawn, ensuring that the edges of the circle match up with the edges of the square. Trace around the circle.
4. Before removing the circle, add a couple of marks on either side of your circle to show where it was lined up on your square. This helps ensure that when you line up the circle on each side, you will end up with the same size scallop.
5. Now you can trace your circle on the remaining three sides.
6. Cut this out. This will be your template.
7. Place your template onto your cardstock and trace.
8. Cut it out.
9. Using a ruler and your bone folder, make a score line on all four sides. This will create the box that you initially started your template with. For mine I end up with a 5″x5″ box in the centre, which, when folded will be my card base size.
10. Fold along those score lines and this is what you end up with.
11. This is a photo of the inside of the card and the belly band. For the belly band I cut a 1″x12″ piece of pattern paper loosely wrapped it around and stuck the ends together at the front using sticky strip. My focal point covers the seam.

    

This card was created using more pieces that were laying around on my desk. The belly band was left over after designing some wedding invitation samples. This was one that she didn’t choose. So instead of tossing it into my basket, I used it.
