Welcome to card ideas using scraps #3. This month we’ll focus on a few ways you can use squares of pattern paper on your cards. We always have lots of strips of pattern paper among our scraps and those strips can easily be cut into squares.
If you missed the previous posts, you can find them linked below:
You can see how these three cards come together in this video:
The first card I’m sharing is a simple one. Simply cut several squares of the same size and create a background on a card base. For this particular card I used nine 1-1/8″ x 1-1/8″ squares (3 each of 3 different patterns). I created three rows of pattern paper squares with a greeting across the middle.
Measurements:
- Thick Basic White: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″
- Basic White: 3″ x 3″ and 1″ x 3-3/4″
- Pool Party: 1/2″ x 3-3/4″
- Lighter than Air DSP: 1-1/8″ x 1-1/8″ (3 each of 3 different patterns) and 1/2″ x 4-1/4″ (inside)
- Dots: x2
An easy variation of this card would be to simply change out the size, and number of squares.
For this second card, our squares are even smaller, measuring 1″ x 1″. I used them to create a border by turning them on their side so they are more of a diamond shape.
Measurements:
- Thick Basic White: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″
- Pool Party: 3-3/4″ x 5″
- Basic White: 3″ x 3″ to cut circle and scrap for greeting
- Lighter than Air DSP: 1″ x 1″ squares (x11)
- Yellow Twine: 8″
- Dots: x3
You could easily modify this card by having your border go across the card instead of up and down, or even fill the entire background with the scraps of pattern paper.
For the third card, we’ll step it up a bit and create a quilted look to our card. Our squares start as 2″ x 2″ but then we’ll cut them into 8ths diagonally. Check out the video in this post to see how that’s done. After we have all our pieces cut it’s like assembling a quilt. It takes a bit of time and patience but I think the end result is worth it.
Measurements:
- Lemon Lolly: 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″
- Basic White: 4″ x 5-1/4″ (inside); 2″ x 2″ (x4); 2-1/2″ x 4-1/4″ for die cutting; and scrap for greeting
- Lighter than Air DSP: 2″ x 2″ (x4) cut into 8ths and 1″ x 4″ (inside)
- Copy Paper: 4″ x 4″
- Bubble Bath Ribbon: 6″
- White Twine: 6″
- Dots: x2
The three cards I shared with you today are a few of my favourites but there are a LOT more ways that you can incorporate squares on your cards.
Until next time,
